Stay Healthy and Happy this Holiday Season

The holiday season is upon us! This should be a joyful time but it is often stressful! While we can't help you with buying gifts or hosting parties, we can take away the stress of staying healthy this season. Here is our Well Powered holiday eating guide!

1. Look at the holidays as an exciting challenge, not as a lost cause

We often hear people say that the holidays are a bad time to try to lose weight and they are just going to wait until after the new year because it's pointless to try now. Sure, the holidays bring more parties and special food but that doesn't mean you can't lose weight. Look at this time as a challenge. If you can make it through this then the rest of the year will be a piece of (healthy) cake!

2. Make a top 3 list

Everyone has some special foods they look forward to during the holidays. And guess what? You can still have those things! The key is to be thoughtful about what you choose to put on your plate. Eat the things you most enjoy but skip those things you could care less about. In other words, don't just grab the fruit cake because it's on the table. Come up with a plan now. List out your top 3 favorite holiday foods and enjoy them! But promise yourself you will not indulge in anything else that deviates from your plan. This way you will not feel deprived and will still get to enjoy those foods that say "holiday" to you.

3. Celebrate the holidays when they come but don't let them linger

No matter what you celebrate, there is a defined period of time when each holiday occurs. And same should go for your indulging. The biggest mistake

people make during the holidays is letting them linger. It is unlikely that you will gain a significant amount of weight over the course of a day or even a week. What results in lasting weight gain is when you let the holiday eating mentality linger. Get food out of your house when the celebration is over to avoid the temptation of overindulging for another week...or month. Sure, there might be treats at work every day or people dropping by with gifts but that doesn't mean every day is a holiday. You don't have to eat things just because they are around. Follow your normal plan when you aren't celebrating.

4. Stay Active (or get active)!

January 2nd is the most popular time to start a new workout regimen or recommit to one. It's great that people find motivation in the new year but starting or increasing your workout routine a few weeks earlier would actually be more beneficial! Being active leading up to and during the holiday season will help you to burn off those extra calories and will put you in a healthy mindset.

5. Be mindful at parties

Bring a healthy dish, survey your options, pick your top 3 favorite things, fill the rest of your plate with lean protein and veggies, stop eating when you're satisfied, and enjoy yourself! These are the keys to healthy eating at a party. Check out our blog post on how to have a Well Powered Thanksgiving for more details!

6. Be Realistic

If you know you are going to indulge a little during the holidays, don't set huge weight loss goals for yourself. Acknowledge that you may just maintain your weight and you will be happy with that. Even if you gain a a few pounds, recognize that this was just temporary and know that you can lose it again. Don't get discouraged or feel guilty. Stay positive and get back on track!

Happy Holidays!
